Create Password Protected Contacts in Windows Phone with Safehouse

By -

We all love to have a bit of secrecy, and there could be many reasons for having a contact not to be seen by others. Though Windows phone does not have this feature in built, you can get this kind of feature using an app and still maintain the contacts like the default phone book.

How to use the App :

Safehouse App allows you to create a completely separate directory to store contacts and lock it down with a password of your choice. You will be able to make calls, sms and even email the contacts from the same interface which will launch the respective native apps of Windows phone for you. Lets take a look at the detailed features of the app :

Creating a Contact :

Since the app replicates the same kind of interface Windows Phone natively as for creating a new contact, you get all the fields you had been using on the phone. This way you don’t feel using a different contact book at all.  You can include a photo from your album, add multiple phone numbers, address etc.

Searching Contact :

This turned out to be almost the same way. The contacts can be searching using the first and the last name and also a category which you don’t use on Windows Phone. The category option can  be used from the menu bar.

Backup &  Restore :

The app allows you to backup all the contacts in .SDF format which cannot be read using any text editor. It seems to be a database file, but I have not tried opening it yet.

Before importing, you will need to give the app permission to access your Skydrive account. It will create a folder named as Safehouse Backup and will have two files, one for category and other for contacts.

Suggestions :

There is no way you can import contacts from existing Phone Book. I think this is done with the assumption that you have very small number of contacts which you want to hide. There is no way to export them into your phonebook either. So my suggestion to the developer would be to add this feature to help user with some of the existing contacts.

There is no way to recover the password here. So make sure you run the backup automatically everyday or right after you add or change something. I will suggest developer to add a background process to upload or at least add a reminder to backup.

When updating a contact, it can ask for the password again just before saving it. That’s a good security feature.

Download :

This is a paid app with a trial in place to use for up to five contacts.
