Excited about all the new changes announced by Microsoft in Windows Phone 8? Well here is some bad news if you own any of the existing Windows Phone handset.
Microsoft has confirmed that none of the existing Windows Phone handsets will be updated to WP8. This is quite obvious because Windows Phone 8 requires new hardware for most of the features, that existing Windows Phone lack.
The Redmond company will however release another update for existing WP users, apparently WP 7.8, that will bring all the non-hardware related features to current generation WP handsets. This should hopefully include the new Start screen, native code support, the ability to resize the live tiles and more.
Whats in the new Start Screen of Windows Phone 7.8
- You can set your stile size between Double Wide, Small and Medium. The Smaller one take up one tile space which actually is the answer to folders.
- The Gap between the Start Screen and the End of the Screen edge is gone. This means everything is actually centered now.
- You are going to get more colour choice and hopefully we will see more what Windows 8 has.
Now since existing users are not going to get upgrades, Nokia is planning to rollout apps for existing Windows Phone users and not just Lumia users. They are going to come out with Play to DLNA, Camera App, Nokia Music 3.0 etc.
Paul Thurrott also suggest that Windows Phone 7.8 will be delivered to all WP7.5 handsets by bypassing the carriers.
