Windows Phone Dev Center allows to change Publisher name, Without Support

By -

One of the most requested feature which I see in the new Windows Phone Dev Center is allowing a publisher to change “Publisher Name” and that too multiple times.

Change Publisher Name Option in Dev Center

It so happened that when I registered my dev account, I had used this site name as publisher name, and there was no way to change them. Later when I contacted support, requesting them to change my publisher name to my real name, I got an email saying :

Hello Ashish,

Thank you for contacting the Windows Phone Dev Center Support team. You should be able to update your Publisher name with this new platform.  Please go to your Account, click Edit under Contact info, update your Publisher name, and click Save.

First I thought they might have just enabled this one time for me but later I found that it is possible to change it any number of times I want. If it was a special case, it should have not allowed to change it any further.

Later when I checked the Dev Center Help Page, It clearly mentions that :

Dev Center improves your registration and payout experience in many ways. Now you can:

  • Change account info such as name, address, phone, email, publisher name, and approver contact info in Dev Center.

Expanded Registration and Payout

Also, every time you change your publisher name, you will receive an email asking you to confirm your email address. Below is screenshot when I tried to change my name three times. Surprisingly third email did not drop in, when I chose the same publisher name,  which I chose for the first time.

I am pretty sure every change might trigger the validation process which will make sure that you are allowed to use the name. So make sure you are aware what name you will use and if you change often, users who want to find you by name, might never find you again.
