“Activation Problem” with Nokia Music App in Windows Phone & Licensing

Since a couple of days when I tried to download music using the Nokia Music App on my Windows Phone, it always showed an error saying “Activation Problem, The phone is already registered with a Nokia Music Unlimited Subscription”. Because of this I wasn’t able to download any song, and was missing the awesome music service.

What was even more interesting is that in India, Nokia Music Plus was never launched. However, after thinking a bit I can recall that once I had used my Nokia Account in Lumia 820 when in UK. Nokia Music Plus was already activated there. Probably that was the reason my account was linked with the Nokia Music Plus service and hence when I tried to download it never worked.

There is another reason here. My Lumia 920 was bought in UK and the Nokia Music License must belong to that country. So finally after checking out couple of forums on the Internet, I realized the only option was to connect with Nokia Care team. I chose Live Chat instead of Twitter or Facebook or even support forums.

Ulimited Subscription in Nokia Account

So after having a bit of conversation with Nokia Customer Care on Live Chat, he figured out that my Nokia account is also registered with Nokia 808 and he was right. I had my Nokia account there and was able to download the music in that. At the end the support guy said that since your Lumia 920 is from UK so you can not use Nokia Music service in India as it does not have the license.

This was kind of shocking because I had used Nokia Music on Lumia 920 before and only when I started using it on multiple devices did this problem started showing up. Finally I ended up here:

Nokia Support: So, might be in that time you were able to download the songs with the license of UK Nokia Music but when you logined with same id in Nokia 808 that it has been transfer in 808 so now you will not able to use this service in Lumia 920.

I : Ok I understand. Is there a way to fix this?

Nokia Support: No, now it will not able to transfer because Lumia 920 does not have Nokia Music license as per data base. Nokia Music service is a country base service, so as you told me that you were using the Nokia Music in Lumia 920 so it means your device has the license of UK Nokia Music, that’s why you were able to use this service in Lumia 920, but now you have sign in with the same id in 808 so that license has been transferred in 808.  And new license can not be transfer back in Lumia 920.

So finally my problem still remained because my UK License of Lumia 920 was transferred to 808 which was basically Indian. Duh!! Also note that it seems that even if you try changing the IMEI number, it doesn’t work in this situation. So My Lumia 920 doesn’t have a license in the end for Nokia Music and I can only use Nokia 808.

The only option I can think of is getting an Indian Firmware flashed to my Lumia 920 which was actually bought from UK. Secondly I will have to use a new Nokia account after that because my old one is already registered.

If any of you faced the same problem, Do let me know if there is a solution.
