ARM announces new “Display Processor” to Support 4k @120 FPS VR / HDR Performance

As the OEM’s keep pushing the Display Size with a new solution, and impressive displays, ARM is now offering a new solution which will improve viewing experience when watching VR content and HDR videos on their phones. The push is specifically for premium smartphones which are adopting 4k display.
ARM is offering a new  Mali-D71 display processor which is a new Assertive Display 5 chipset, and the ARM CoreLink MMU-600 System Memory Management Unit. This will ensure 4K images can be delivered at a rate of 120 frames per second making those premium smartphones worth. Another advantage of using this is that the ARM Mali-D71 can repurpose the resources required by a secondary display when using a single panel in order to effectively double the performance.

Here is more:

  • It will further improve visibility in direct sunlight.
  • Provide HDR management for display pipelines.
  • Improved gamut and color management.
  • Higher power savings.
  • It can deliver HDR10 or HLG content even on SDR displays.

CES, along with MWC marks the announcement of new Smartphones. I don’t think we will see anyone using the new processors, but then if ARM had been working with OEMs already, we might have a chance.
