Video Review : Baconit, Windows Phone App for Reddit
As Windows Phone market is getting improved day by day, it’s not really far that we will have all the major app which people look around will be here. Today we are reviewing one such app, Baconit, an unofficial app for Reddit but its done so very well following the philosophy of Metro UI and features, you wont feel a glitch.
If you ask me How the App is ? My Reply would be ” When the The Official App when it launches will have a tough job beating this out, the standards are already set very high.”
Features in Short :
The first thing to notice is the sleek design, full mango support, with no extra ornamentation done which I love because its more to read and track than have fun, second you will love is that its pretty fast loading up comments in a thread which is the most important part and lastly it comes with a brilliant visual help which helps you explore the app feature that you don’t need to read this post!!
The App lets you pin Reddit categories, use reddit account, save stories, up and down vote comment, read links and images in the app itself, threaded comments, easy reading and a smart bar etc.
Features with loads of Details :
My Reddit :
When you launch the app and sign-in with your account, the first screen
- has the list of Reddit which you have configured with your online account.
- You can star the Reddit, which you use most, to move it on top of the list but you cannot arrange it.
- You can add new Reddit and choose to sync online or offline but be aware that Offline Syncing will be lost if you re install the app.
- Pin them to start screen and you will love the magic of random images making it a perfect match with Windows Phone Metro. It also displays the number of comments, points, toast notification for messages
Account
The Second screen is for Account where if you are logged in you have option to Submit Links, See your Messages which includes reply on comments you made, your link Karma, Comments Karma.
Smart Bar :
Instead of just having a search we have a smarter box here which can also open up any Reddit for you if you type in the short url like /r/wp7 or if you paste the story link you can checkout the comments.
This comes handy when you have got any of the links over email or on twitter, so instead of searching, you can just paste it here.
Reading a Reddit :
- When you open up a Reddit you get to see Hot, New, Top, Controversial tags.
- Each of the topics can be voted using the easy to use up and down keys ( a very good job done here )
- Offline Support which lets you download all the topics.
- You can long press to save or hide the topics
- If the topics are in form of Link or Image, it opens right within the app instead of launching in the browser.
Reading a Thread :

- Reading Posts is a bliss here with right size of fonts and clean background.
- All the comments are arranged in a threaded fashion which can be collapsed or expanded back.
- Selecting a comment lets you vote
- Double Tap the post to expand and see the details.
- Hide Comments by double tapping the comment section.
- Save Individual Posts for offline reading.
- You can edit or delete your comments.
Settings :
- Control how often updates are fetched
- You can filter adult contents
- Control when you should have zero notification using the Do Not Disturb Mode.
Suggestion : How the App can become even better
- Skydrive Integration to save Local Reddit
- Context menu required to delete and Pin to start the Reddit
- Users should be able to move Reddit up and down instead of just starring it.
- In fact Tiles should be used instead of list which can display how many unread threads, comments or new topics are there inside.
- When Submitting a link, if possible, let the Title of the link be auto fetched for faster submission.
- Another Pivot can be added to list down all saved stories only.
