Can Lumia 630 Replace a Fitness Tracker ?

Just not the Lumia 630 but also the 1520 and 930 come with hardware which allows you to track step count, calories burnt, kilometer walked suing the Nokia’s Sense Core API or the settings in your phone, named as, Motion Data. This is coming with CYAN update and we talked about in detail, here.

However, one curiosity always kept me thinking, if it is correct? Can it replace fitness trackers and so on. So I compared it with Flex Bit with Lumia 630 step counter and the results were approximately the same. You would find a bit of difference in kilometer walked and calories burned but that’s because of our own fault.

Keep the Phone Always with You: We all end up forgetting your phone somewhere in the house or on the table or in your drawer while the fitness tracker stays with you always. This is why you would see the difference when you compare with flex.

Low Battery:  Your phone will go low on battery sooner or later. When that happens, the tracking stops. Only way to start it is to exit the low battery mode.

Missing Third Party Integration: There is no way you can share this data with services like Flex, Endomondo and others. Many already use this on daily basis and it has to go seamless, you need to make data available to any platform one wants.

Reset Problem: If you ever reset your Motion Data from settings, all your details of steps, calories burnt will be lost.

Conclusion:

If you are a casual runner and just want to see how many steps you took when you go on a walk in the morning with no intention to look back on your previous data ever,  this should be enough. However if you are serious about your stats, using a fitness tracker is a better option.
