Create & Manage ZIP files on Windows Phone with 8 ZIP

Archiver was one of the first apps in pre-Windows Phone 8.1 era to support ZIP and RAR files but there wasn’t any option to create new archive files till now.

Starting with WP 8.1, the API’s now allows one to save file to internal storage and SD card. Utilizing this feature, Archiver and a new app–8 ZIP– allows you to create new archive files.  Here is a quick video demo:

How it works?

What 8 ZIP brings to Windows Phone is complete management of archive files. You can create one and manage existing ones. You can add or delete files from archive and open one from the archive files.

You can extract all or selected the files into internal storage of the SD card to a location of your choice. You can see the size of individual file with compression ration.

Zip App for Windows Phone

It is also possible to encrypt the zip files for 7Z and ZIP formats. It uses AES 256 encryption.

Extension Supported :

You can create ZIP, 7z, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ while open RAR, ZIP, 7z, ZipX, ISO, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ARJ, CAB and so on.

That said, the look and feel of the app is not up to the mark end bit edgy but you can customize colors, pin transparent tiles and so on. I guess these will be fixed in next updates. Also the app is not registered to support archive files, so if you open using the Files App, it will open in OS supported way.

Request to developer to have screen where I can see recently accessed archives and open it instantly. Right now the whole thing is stuck in the last opened archive file.
