Create OneDrive Albums Using Photos App from Windows PC and Mobile

While OneDrive offers Album creation, but if you want to create Albums on OneDrive from Windows 10 PC, using pictures and videos already available, this guide will help you do that using Photos App.

Photos App on Windows 10 Mobile & PC lets you create “Virtual” Albums, which comes in handy when you want to show only a set of pictures to anybody. They aren’t real folders, not on the phone or pc at least. When I first tried it using the Insiders Build, I wasn’t sure why this feature was even present, but now it makes a lot of sense.

Once the photos from your device are uploaded, they will be available on OneDrive > Photos section > Albums.

Create OneDrive Albums Using Photos App from Windows PC and Mobile

Step 1: Launch Photos App. Switch to the Albums section. If you have taken a picture using the camera or taken a screenshot, you should see Camera Roll and Screenshots folders.

Step 2: Now, Look for a “+” sign in the menu bar. Tap or Available as New Album option. Click on it, and it will ask you to select pictures you want to add to the album. You will have to select at least one picture. Once done, click on the Create button.

Step 3: The Photos app supports microSD Card, and it lists all of them, including photos on Phone Storage and OneDrive under collection tabs. Next, You can name it by changing the default by clicking on the pencil icon. Right-click on any of the images, and set it as Cover Photo.

Step 4:  To add pictures to the album, first, open and then select Edit, and then you will be able to add more pictures, remove them and even delete the album. When you delete the album, it does not remove the photos and videos inside it.

You can also edit photos and videos using Photos App.

How to Upload Album from Photos App to OneDrive

Step 1: When on Windows 10 PC, the option to save to OneDrive appears instantly after you have created the album. The button—Save in OneDrive—appears on the top. When you click on it, the album and the images will be available online.

Step 2: If you don’t upload right away, you can always come back to the same place to do it. Another way to instantly upload it is using the share method.

Step 3: Select the album, and click on the Share button on the top-right. It will then offer two choices—Upload and Sway—choose the former.

What Happens When You Delete an Album from Photos App

Your photos do not get deleted, but the album is no more visible on your OneDrive or your Album App. It is the reason why I said that these are virtual albums. It also means if you have the same photos on two virtual folders, they will not be removed if you remove an album.

On Windows 10 Mobile

  • First, make sure the Photos App can show content from OneDrive. Go to Settings > Toggle on “Show My cloud-only content from OneDrive.”
  • Now open the album you created on the phone, and want to upload it to OneDrive.
  • Look for an upload button. Press, and it will create the album and also upload pictures to OneDrive.

  • A progress section appears on a top post this. You can cancel if you want.
  • An option to share this album is also available. This will create a Public Link that you can share anywhere.

Note: Once the album is uploaded to OneDrive, there is no virtual album left on the phone or pc. If you delete this, it will delete it from OneDrive as well. No photos or videos will get deleted from the phone.

Overall it is a great way to upload photos and videos to OneDrive, but the performance of the Photos app may not always be as expected. Let us know your experience.

  1. I have a question. When you create an “Album” are you just tagging photos with the album name when you add the photos so you can you add a photo to multiple albums without duplicating the file?

OR are you placing the photo in an album folder, meaning that you cannot have a photo that is in the album called “Sydney Opera House” as well as “Family portrait” without duplicating the file?

I have looked around but cannot find the answer!

  2. Hello Kristen,

It is like tagging. You can have the same photo in any number of albums. They are not physically together.

Maybe experiment a bit with a sample photo, but that’s how it works.
