Denim Enables "Phone Update" Download to SD Card in New Windows Phone

One of the biggest drawback which I had faced with Android devices like MOTO E which only have 4 GB internal storage is that when it comes to update, System or App, it gets stuck if you are low in memory on primary storage. Luckily, Windows Phone as an OS allowed to install updates to SD card for apps which solves the problem by a big margin.

Now when it comes to Phone Update, we still had a problem. The firmware update was only downloaded over main phone storage. So if you have devices with only 4 GB of storage, this is a problem. Thanks to Denim Update, this issues is fixed. Windows Phone now allows to download firmer update to SD card if the phone storage does not have enough space.

Lumia software update OS version 8.10.14219.341 (formerly Denim), or above enables support for downloading phone software updates to a SD memory card. The supported devices list includes: Lumia 530/530 Dual SIM, 630/630 Dual SIM, 635, 636, 638, 730 Dual SIM, 735 and 830. The feature will be available for possible software updates coming after 8.10.14219.341.

However there is one small restriction. This is only enabled for new generation devices i.e Lumia 530/530 Dual SIM, 630/630 Dual SIM, 635, 636, 638, 730 Dual SIM, 735 and 830. I am guessing it might have to do something with processor or the overall performance when it comes to updating the phone firmware from SD card. Even the devices like the 820, 1320 and 1520, do not support downloading updates to memory card.

Remember this is completely internal process, and you don’t have any option to set the download location as such. It juts makes sure you don’t have to clear up internal phone storage to update your phone.
