Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Upgrade Path to Windows 10

Versions are the most confusing thing about Windows, and while things haven’t changed much with Windows 10, you need to figure out to which Windows your version gets upgrade.  Last week Microsoft shared their details on a different version, which included the Phone as well. Using this upgrade path, you will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7, 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, but that lasts only for a year except for the phone thing.

When upgrading from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, here is to which version of Windows 10 you will upgrade. Windows 10 has Home, Pro, and Enterprise compared to to the multiple editions in Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Now if you upgrade within the first twelve months of the launch, you will keep getting the Windows 10 updates for free, till you have the device. It is excluded for Windows Enterprise and RT devices though. The other way around is to join Windows 10 insiders and keep upgrading for free if you can live on the bleeding edge.

Update: Microsoft officially launched the OS in on 29th July.

How much Windows 10 will cost?

For consumers, You have two options. Either Upgrade the existing version or buy a new copy of Windows 10. Since Windows doesn’t ask for a key anymore in the start, skip anything, and install Windows 10.

Once upgraded or installed, go to the Windows 10 activation section, and then decide to buy a product key.

The cost is usually $199 for Windows 10 Pro and $139 for Windows 10 Home or if you choose to upgrade Microsoft Store which will $100 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.
