How to Find your Windows 10 Mobile using Cortana & Windows 10 PC

When Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 Build 14322 for Windows 10 PC and Mobile, a lot of features were enabled for Cortana. One of the most important change is the ability to find your Lost or Misplaced Windows 10 Mobile using Cortana. This feature is much easier to use compared to the web option Microsoft has in place under Microsoft devices.

How is it compared to Google’s option to Find your Phone through web search? Its basically the same to be very honest, but the implementation is drastically different. While Google uses its Web Search to implement it, Microsoft is enhancing the users experience by implementing these features with Cortana, and making it work natively with apps.

Basic Requirement:

  • This needs “Find My Phone”  feature to be enabled on the phone. Please read more about it here.
  • Make sure that you are using the same Microsoft account both on your PC, and your phone.
  • Both PC and Phone needs to be connected to Internet.

 Step by Step:

  • Open Cortana on your Windows 10 PC or Laptop.
  • Type Find my Phone, and you will have direct option for this. Take a look at the image below.

  • Next, it will send notification to your phone, and Cortana on Phone will prompt that your phone is being searched.
  • Next on the PC, a small map will show up which will show current location for phone with option to either say Got it or Ring it.
  • When you press Ring it, your phone rings with default ringtone. Making it easy to draw your attention.

Whats on the Map?

If your phone is out of reach, it will make sense to locate it on the map. When the minim map appears on your PC screen, click for an enlarged view. Then you can find your direction to the location or at least get an idea where you could have left it.

I hope in future, Microsoft will let find phones that belong to our family members, and they are in our Microsoft Account. That way, I can use the phone to figure out where it is.

That said, this feature doesn’t 100% guarantee that you will find your phone, in case it has moved or stolen away. That is something only security or police in your country can help with. However, it does make sure that you still have a chance to find it.
