GPS Calculator : Find Distances and Area right on Windows Phone
So how do you find out area of the football field sitting at your home ? No, you don’t need to bring the old map or pull out the atlas which is not been updated for months, but if you have a Windows Phone, there is an app which help you find all these stuff.
GPS Calculator App for Windows Phone 7 / 7.5 is for heavy map users, specially trackers, who would need to know things like distance between two places, area of the terrain which is not necessarily documented and specially in case the GPS is offline but accurate data is a high priority. This app uses WGS 84 (WGS-84 earth model) which has highly accurate result and less error prone model to find such calculations. It uses Bing Map.
This app is from Kitya, The same dev who gave us Image Map.
Features of GPS Calculator :

This app comes in four sections, Project, Distance, Area and Convert where Distance mode has 2700 Cities data available offline.
Project : Better understood as distance compass, which takes angle, into consideration to tell you where you would land if you got data like “10 miles 45 degree North”, a term seriously used by navigators on ships, submarines or airplanes.
Once you enter your current Longitude & latitude, distance and angle it will show you where exactly on earth you will land up. There is a map support if you want to pickup from it.
Distance : Simple but powerful because of offline mode. Here, you calculate distance between two places on the map.
Area : The most impressive feature here is which lets you mark n number of points on the map and then calculate the area covered by all the points. So if, you want to see how extensive is a football field or your terrace you can use that. This comes with aerial mode, so you can see the physical objects.
Convert : Can convert between Latitude & Longitude to UTM and vice versa and also you can choose for Degrees Minutes Seconds, Decimal Degrees. Useful if you want to input this data into any device which needs it.
Other than these here are few more things the app does :
Smart GPS Usage : This app does not use your GPS in the background all the time. In fact, to start using you need to start the GPS section manually from the app to find your current location so next time it will not use it again unless you hit the start button again.
Advanced altimeter, which can view, elevation profile graphs, get current GPS elevation and It can also compare it using five different elevation data models!
If you need even more accurate result you can try “Require High GPS Accuracy“, for better result, but this might drain your batter a bit. Also, set your Location Movement Threshold.
This app comes in four sections, Project, Distance, Area and Convert where Distance mode has 2700 Cities data available offline.
Whats New in Version 5 :
- You can now share location in any supported format via SMS, email or social.
- Time zone, Local time and Sunrise-Sunset calculations for any location
- Support for SRTM3 (shuttle radar topography mission), ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer – a high resolution imaging instrument that is flying on the Terra satellite), GTOPO30 (global digital elevation model from topo maps), USGS elevation data, and finally Google’s elevation data web service.
Suggestion : What else the App can do
The app is very smooth and I found no issues with location etc but there are few things that still can be implemented.
- Remember the last “my location”. As of now it clears it when you relaunch the app.
- Skydrive Integration for Exporting and Importing Favorites.
- Export data as KML file so it can be used with other location.
- Live Tile Support.
