Homebrew App to Change SMS / Email / Voicemail Alert tone on Windows Phone

Even though Windows Phone, after mango update, allowed to set custom ringtone, but it was limited to phone calls and many of us who wanted to use a custom alter tone from SMS,  from Apps like Insider or Free Ringtone App etc, had no option.

Now if you are lucky enough to have an unlocked phone, which either has WP7 Root Tools installed or a custom rom, MyRingtone2SMS from djfoxer  allows you to set an alert tone of SMS / Email / Voicemail from custom ringtones.

Set SMS Tone on Windows Phone

How it works ?

It basically scans all the folder where ringtones are possibly saved on Windows Phone like \My Documents\My Ringtones\, \My Documents\Ringtones\ etc and then makes it available to you for selection. Here, you can now select which can be used or can appear in the alert tone list for SMS.

So all it does is gives you is finds all the ringtones, gives you selection screen. Now to change you will need to visit the Settings > Ringtones + Sound > New text and IM and then choose from what you have selected to appear in the app.

Update

Version  0.1.1

  • You can select  ringtone length,  ringtone volume, vibration length, vibration “position” and  breaks
  • It comes in Two modes. Basic and Advanced. In basic mode you just choose few options from menu or fill in textboxes. Advanced mode gives simple and powerful tool to customize your alert, like in Windows Mobile :
  • Set Max Volume in percentage,  How long the ringtone should play, how long the phone will vibrate, Waiting time etc.
  • You can choose to start vibration simultaneously with sound or at the beginning or end.

The advance option is till hard to configure with kind of annotations it uses. I strongly suggest to make it simpler.

Suggestions :

If the app can allow users to preview the alert tone, right from the app itself, the process will be even smoother. Right now only selection is possible so either the user has to know it before hand or swap between to choose.  Though it is possible to add all of them but then it will create a unwanted long list of tone in the settings.

This app needs WP7 Root Tools permission and can be downloaded from this forum thread. Make sure to grant the trusted permission to the app before launching it. We hope that this feature gets finally rolled into the next version of Windows Phone, Apollo.
