Homebrew Apps / Projects based on Kinect SDK

Kinect or any device which can track human movements and convert that into digital or even physical action ( like controlling a robot to lift heavy objects )  is the future and we are already seeing apps, games getting developed based on the Windows Kinect SDK or even the Xbox Kinect SDK. One such example was set by Etronika which built an app for a Bank.

Below is the list of Apps / projects of which some can be used by you and get you the idea of whats coming in future.

KineSis

This project lets you control presentations running on your PC and Kinect connected, using gestures, for opening documents, moving between slides, Zoom, Scroll. It can also control Word and mark sections of it, Excel where you can zoom into columns, Simple Text and Image.

It also comes with integrated menu which can be enabled by raising your right hand and then choosing one. Also you can focus on elements of presentation like charts i.e. if you have a lot of charts, each of  such can be brought to front and used to explain whats in it.

You can check the project here and watch the awesome video where all this is explained and demoed

Paint for Kinect :

Another interesting project if you like to have invisible canvas instead of mouse. This project lets you control Windows Paint application. Details

Virtual PA using Kinect

This project tries to create a SIRI like Assistant but using Kinect and interpreting what users voice and gestures to lets say find directions or find weather condition’s of a place where you place your hands on. Still in development but makes a lot of sense. It also is aiming to make a cool avatar and I really wish it can get those Xbox Avatar like of stuff. More Details

KinectME :

Human Anatomy based project where Kinect Sensor can be used to explore different parts of human body with details description. There is a video posted on this at Vimeo and project is developed by Britta Meyer and Sebastian Ronis using Blender which is  free open source 3D content creation suite.

Nayi Disha  ( A new direction )

Educational App which takes advantage of the Natural User Interface of Kinect sensor and help users learn through actions and games keeping them off the learning curve. So for example kinds can be thought how to keep the sounding cleans so fly dont gather up and similar situations which can be taken from day-to-day activity.

So there is one game which lets kids swat the flies and it is made possible by Kinect tracking both the hands and when the fly is caught between the hands, its gone. Before playing the game, kids can be told about why they are doing it and what can be the advantage. This will help grow the ideas right in them without much of day-to-day reminders.

Kinect Maths :

This project aims to make students understand maths in action for example how does the graph grows up or down when an object accelerates or slows down. Using this app one can physically stand before Kinect and see the graph getting plotted making the concept dead clear. It also leverages the voice recognition.  More Details

Fusion 4D :

This is the most advanced we have seen till now and brings in the 3D objects into real life using Kinect and 3D glasses so you can manipulate the objects which you feel projecting out from the monitor. They call it Natural and Immersive user interface for manipulating 3d Objects..

Not only gestures but it comes with its own set of voice commands which user can speak out to interact with the object. So to hold an object you can say grab and explode to open it up. So what does 4D stands for ? It’s the time which is fused with 3D objects to see how the object grew in time.  Watch the Video | Project Details
