How to Backup and Sync Messages on Windows 10 Mobile

Windows 10 Mobile is the latest update for Windows Phone 8.1 devices and Microsoft will be rolling out to devices this year. The new OS comes with host of new features including new and improved UI along with more features which makes the OS competitive to Android and iOS.

Messages are still used by many people even though a lot of social networking messaging apps have more priority these days. With Windows 10 Mobile, you can back up and sync your messages across devices. This option is available in Settings.

To enable this, open Settings-> System and select Messaging.

Interesting to note that the option to toggle text backup has been removed, and replaced with sync messages across devices. I am guessing that Microsoft has permanently turned on the Text Backup.

The text backup is stored in OneDrive, and whenever you use the same Microsoft ID on another device, you can sync and download messages on to that mobile.

There is also option to download selective messages. You can download messages “The last month”, “The last year” or “Any time”. If you want to download all messages, select Any time. This is a pretty useful option when moving from one Windows phone to another. Check out the video below for a quick demo :

Microsoft soon will roll out a feature on messaging app for Windows 10, which will let you see all messages on your PC, and will also let you send messages right from the app. Till that time, we suggest you to take a look on how you can send text message using Cortana from your PC.

  1. No “History And Backup” in my win10 phone as pictured above. I found “settings” in “conversations” that has similar settings but fails to “backup” my text to “oneDrive” and to “messaging” on my win10 desktop. All this was working fine until 01/09/2018 then all suddenly stopped. It seems with different versions / updates with win10 mobile the location of “settings” get moved around and changed. I am using version 1703 of win10 mobile on a Lumia 640LTE.
