How to Enable Full-Screen Start Menu in Windows 10

Full-Screen Start Menu is useful on devices where Desktop has less or zero meaning.  If you have a device that works as a tablet, then it is likely that you would mostly launch apps. However, if you still want to enable full-screen Start Menu in Windows 10, on the Desktop, the option is available.  This guide is also helpful if you have accidentally enabled Full-screen Start Menu, and need to turn it off.

How to Enable Full-Screen Start Menu in Windows 10

  • Go to Settings > Personalization >  Start
  • Enable Full-Screen Start Menu  by toggling on the option “Use Start full screen.”

It is almost like going back to the Windows 8.1 Start Screen. Here are things you should know when you switch to that mode.

  • The start menu switches between desktop and start screen
  • You have access to Taskbar all the time, which includes ap shortcuts, Windows Search, Cortana, clock, network, volume controls, etc.
  • The top left has a hamburger menu. Click on it and you will the same start menu before switching to full screen.

How to enable or disable Tablet mode in Windows 10

If you want to go minimal, the second way to go full screen is using the inbuilt tablet mode. It gets rid of the big search bar,  apps on the Taskbar, and disables the desktop mode.

  • Go to Settings > System > Tablet Mode.
  • Click on the dropdown “When I Sign in”  and choose use tablet mode
  • Also, choose to disable the notification about the switch when Windows does it automatically.
  • You can then decide to hide app icons from the Taskbar or hide the Taskbar itself.

Tablet Mode is useful if you do not need to use Mouse or keyboard all the time, and the work is casual. You can launch apps, type ion a few things, watch movies and so on. So unless you need the exact same things, Tablet mode is not for you.
