There can be a number of reasons due to which this can happen. Users may face the problem of hidden icons from the position it was pinned on the taskbar. One more similar problem users may face is the blank selected area on the taskbar when a window is open.

The reason behind this problem could be the corruption of some system files or your user account. There are three methods which you can try to restore those icons.

Running SFC (System File Checker) Scan

  1. Press Windows button + X on your keyboard. Select “Command Prompt (Admin)”. If you are on the latest version of Windows 10 then you might find Windows PowerShell instead of Command Prompt. Open “Windows PowerShell (Admin)” if so.
  2. Type: sfc /scannow and press enter.SFC Scan
  3. As soon as the scan is complete, type exit and press enter.

This process will search for the corrupt system files and will repair them. After the completion of the scan, restart your machine and the disappeared icons should be back.

If above method doesn’t solve your problem then you can try the next method.

Using DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) Tool

  1. Press Windows button + X on your keyboard. Select “Command Prompt (Admin)”. If you are on the latest version of Windows 10 then you might find Windows PowerShell instead of Command Prompt. Open “Windows PowerShell (Admin)” if so.
  2. Then type: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth DSIM Tool

This process will enable the DSIM Tool and will restore the health of your Windows 10 image. It will restore your version of Windows to its initial state to work smoothly. Here restore doesn’t means removing user’s data and resetting the whole OS. It will just restore system files to their initial states.

This process will definitely bring back your lost icons. But, if this process is also not helpful to you then you might try the method given below. This method may prove to be your last resort and after that, no other may become useful.
