How to set up Kid’s Corner on Windows Phone 8

Most of our phones are used by our kids for playing games or videos and sometimes even for making accidental call, app buying etc. I am sure the later part in the above statement turns to be accidental, but there is no full proof way to keep kids of your personal stuff on the phone or anything else.

Windows Phone 8 is the first Mobile OS to come with a Kid’s Corner feature which makes sure your kids causes you no monetary or personal loss and still can use your phone and play his favourites apps and games.

How to set up ?

  • Go to Phone Settings
  • Look for Kid’s Corner option and turn it on after selecting it.
  • This will launch the kids corner setup, and you will be able to choose Apps which your kids like.
  • You will also be able to choose Games, Videos and Music for your kids.

Why set a password ?

Some of us will not like to set password but it has its purpose.

  • Nobody Apart from your Kids should have access to Kids Corner.
  • You know when your kid is using the Phone because only you can unlock it.
  • When you unlock your Phone after switching to Kids Section, you don’t unlock your main phone area.

How your kids will use it ?

Hand your phone to your kid and ask him to swipe left from the lock screen. This will give him instant access to personalized section just built for kids. He can change theme colour, take picture using the camera and also set his name.

Facts about Kid’s Corner :

  • If your phone gets locked, you will have to unlock your phone first. However, you can unlock it from the Kids Corner also. This makes sure you don’t give him or her access to your phone.
  • To return back to the main phone section, you need to lock and then unlock.
  • Even though, your kid has access to Camera Section, they don’t have access to your photos.
  • To quickly add any app to Kids Corner, long press and select Add to Kid’s Corner. I found this bit distracting because It makes the menu long.
  • There is not separate data area for apps which are selected for Kid’s Corner.  This means if you share a game which you are also playing, the kid can see your records etc.
