A microphone is a significant input device, and it prevents your audio from being used for any purposes other than what is intended. As an input, the program listens to your voice and then outputs it through the speakers or headphones. However, many people are unaware of how to configure and use this device properly. You have a choice of connecting the microphone either by plugging it into the computer (Wired Microphone) or by using Bluetooth to connect it to the laptop (Wireless Microphone). Once you connect the Microphone to your computer, Microsoft Windows automatically searches and installs the drivers required for the Microphone to function correctly.

Using the Windows Microphone Setup Wizard, you need to install the microphone drivers before beginning the setup process. Windows 11/10 will not install the required drivers unless you download them to your computer from the manufacturer’s website. Follow these methods to set up your microphone:

1] Connect Microphone to PC

Plug the microphone into the computer’s Audio Port if it is a wired microphone. You need to follow the steps given below if you are using a Wireless Microphone:

  1. To add a Bluetooth device, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth and other devices and click on the Add Bluetooth or any other device option.
  2. Turn Bluetooth ON if it is not already.
  3. On the Add Device screen > Select the Bluetooth option, and the computer will automatically search for your Bluetooth Microphone.
  4. Depending on your device, you may need to press the pair button to allow the Microphone to be detected.
  5. As soon as Windows detects your microphone, click on your Microphone and allow Windows to install the required drivers.
  6. You can exit the screen after adding the Microphone by clicking Done.

As you connect your Microphone, move on with the setup procedure.

2] Setup Microphone in Windows

Upon connecting your Microphone to the PC for the first time, you must complete the setup process. Follow these steps to do so:

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound > scroll down in the right-pane and click on Sound Control Panel link or More sound settings.
  • On the pop-up window, click on the Recording tab > Select your Microphone > Click on Configure.
  • On the next screen, click on the Setup Microphone option to open the Microphone Setup Wizard.
  • On the Microphone Setup Wizard screen, select the Type of Microphone that you have and click on the Next button.
  • On the next screen, read & understand the tips for using your Microphone and click on Next.
  • Once you’ve read the displayed sentence in your native voice, click the Next button.
  • To complete the microphone setup, click the Finish button.

If you could not hear your Microphone, it was probably muted or picked up your sound through another Microphone. It is in such cases that you will need to repeat the above steps after unmuting the Microphone.

3] Test & Configure the Microphone

Having completed the setup process, you may want to test the Microphone to ensure it works properly.

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound > scroll down in the right-pane and click on Sound Control Panel link under Related Settings.
  • Choose the Recording tab > Speak in your voice, and green bars should appear as you speak.

Green bars are not visible when the recording device is not functioning. If that is the case, you may have to update your drivers and restart the installation.

In Windows 11, you can go to Settings (Win + I) > System > Sound. Set the format, input volume, and toggle on the Enhance audio.

If you want to test the Microphone, click on the Start test button and speak something. Once you are done, click on Stop test. The wizard will reveal the percentage of total volume the microphone picked up.

Why Is My Mic Not Working on PC?

Please ensure that your microphone isn’t muted. Muting the microphone or setting the volume to a minimum can also cause a ‘microphone problem. You can check this by right-clicking the speaker icon in the Taskbar and selecting Recording devices.

Check to see if the microphone issue persists.

  • Install the microphone, and it will all be nice and snug.
