How To Turn Keyboard Lighting On/off on a PC or Laptop

Depending on what kind of keyboard you have, the trick to turn the keyboard lighting on or off can differ. However, below are some of the methods that you can try to enable or disable backlit on your keyboard:

  1. Turn On/Off Backlit
  2. Windows Mobility Center
  3. Reset Keyboard
  4. Software configuration
  5. Reset BIOS
  6. Update BIOS

So let’s go ahead and talk about these methods one by one:

1] Turn On/Off Backlit

One of the first things that you can do is completely turn off and backlit on your keyboard. Doing this is a pretty simple job since most keyboards come with a function key that lets you do it.

So do look at the function keys or F keys at the top row of your keyboard and look for any sign related to light.

In most cases, the light button should be F5, F9, or F11. However, you may also notice that there is no effect on the backlit light while pressing the keys.

In such a case, look for an Fn key on your keyboard and then use combinations like FN + F5, F9, or F11. Also, in some laptops, you can try out the Fn + Space button to turn on or off keyboard lighting.

2] Windows Mobility Center

If you are using a Windows laptop, then you can try using Windows Mobility Center. With this utility, you can control a few areas of your Laptop hardware. So follow the below steps:

  • At first, press Windows Key + X and select Mobility Center.
  • Next, locate characteristics corresponding to the feedback of the keys.
  • Then, click on the keyboard backlit option, and a Window with a light setting will appear on your screen.
  • From this menu, choose between on or off. Or you can switch between Bright or dim or select Never off from the dropdown menu.

3] Reset Keyboard

Suppose you are using gaming keyboards or mechanical keyboards with RGB lighting. Then you already know that these keyboards come with different lighting profiles. And often, we switch to some random lightning profile by pressing some key combinations.

So if the same happened with you, too, then the best option is to reset your keyboard settings. This will set all the keyboard settings to their default ones.

However, different Keyboard comes with a different method to reset. Hence, I would recommend you to check out your Keyboard’s manufacturing company.

For instance, I have a HyperX keyboard, and to reset it, I have to press FN + ESC key for 5  seconds. So you can try the same with your Keyboard too.

4] Software configuration

Most of the keyboard manufacturers ship software for their keyboards. Using the software, you can customize your keyboard, remap keys for gaming or adjust the lightning of your keyboard.

So if your keyboard also has utility software, you can try using it to turn on or off backlit on your keyboard.

To find utility software for your keyboard, go to the manufacturer’s website and see if they have anything to offer.

5] Reset BIOS

You can try resetting and updating BIOS. Since there is a chance that the backlit option is turned off in your BIOS, not letting you turn it on. In such a case, you can try resetting bios settings to the default ones and checking if it has helped you fix the issue.

To get into BIOS, do follow the below steps:

  • At first, restart your computer.
  • Then start pressing the DEL button continuously unless you get into the setup menu. However, different computers have different keys for the setup menu. So I would recommend you to perform a quick Google search to know the setup key.
  • Once you are on the BIOS menu, go to Save & Exit tab.
  • Over here, you will find the restore defaults option. So press enter and yes to reset the settings.

6] Update BIOS

In case if your keyboard lightning keeps turning on and off, then you can try updating BIOS. Upgrading BIOS is one of the recommended solutions by most PC manufactures.

However, updating BIOS can be a complicated process, and I would only recommend you check your manufacturer’s guidelines for further help.
