How to Install Windows 10 Techncial Preview to Your Lumia Windows Phone

Today, Microsoft announced the availability of Windows 10 Preview for Phones, which only includes a few of the Lumia devices, which fall under 8 GB internal storage, and Windows Phone 8.1 pre-loaded when bought. I am sure most of you are already half the way to downloading the Technical preview, but here is a quick guide to get you restarted if you haven’t.

  • Make sure your phone is charged up, and you are connected to WIFI. The Download is big and will take some time.
  • Backup your phone using the inbuilt backup option.
  • Signup for Windows Insider Program here. Choose Phones.
  • Next, download the Windows Insider app on your phone.
  • Once done, launch it and signup using your Microsoft Account.
  • Once you are set, you will have to choose between Fast and Slow Download.
  • Next it will ask you to accept the terms and conditions, warranty void scenario et al. l. Accept it.

  • Once done, hit the checkmark to complete the process.
  • Next, go to Settings > Phone Update and check if you have an update. This process takes time, so have patience.
  • Note that you may have to get into Insider Program from time to time, select the process of download ( fast or slow), and initiate the download.

That said, your phone gets a fine upgrade. If not, you will need to use the Windows Phone Recovery Tool to return to Windows Phone 8.1. This will delete all the content, photos, music, and apps from your phone. You will need to use the Restore process when setting up your phone again.
