Is Xbox One S a Worthy Upgrade ? Who Should Buy it ?

Yesterday Microsoft Xbox Team surprises the gaming community with lot many things, and one of the was Xbox One S. This version of console that many expected to be the first one, mostly because of the huge size of the original Xbox One which looked bad when kept along side of the TV. That said, one of the big question that is being asked now, is Xbox One S is really worth an upgrade?

Xbox One S

Before I really get into that discussion, lets take a look at the features that Xbox One S offers.

  • The console is now 40 Percent Smaller compared to the original version.
  • It comes with 2TB Hard Drive compared to 500 GB hard drive, and is much-needed because of increasing amount of Digital download.
  • The console can play 4K Ultra HD Video and High Dynamic Range
  • You also get a 4K Blu-ray player
  • You also get the new Streamlined Controller
  • Because the size has been shrinked, the Xbox One S gets a Vertical Stand for $19.99.
  • You will also need to invest in a USB adapter for Kinect which is free if you are upgrading, else you will have to shell out another $50.
  • Xbox One S starts at $299 for 500 GB version, and 2TB will cost you $399.

One of the important things about Xbox One is that it has the same CPU and GPU of the Xbox One.

Project Scorpio:

Microsoft has also announced the next Xbox One version which is claimed to be the most powerful console when it arrives next Fall. Yeah its a song wait, but its only little more than a year to go. So what is Project Scorpio ?

Xbox Project Scorpio

Its going to be an extreme gaming console for those who crave for powerful hardware exactly like on their PC. Microsoft is aiming to make it future proof by adding so much hardware that it can stand the competition for years to come. Here is a summary of what is expected from the project:

  • It is going to support VR hardware like Oculus and HTC Vive. I am expecting that Microsoft will also bring HoloLens support.
  • It supports 4K gaming at 60 FPS which is much needed.
  • It will be powered by 8-core CPU and a six teraflop GPU. This is crazy if you ask to gamers.

Another things that is expected from the project is option to choose the hardware or in simple words customise based on user preferences. Possible that Microsoft might allow games to upgrade their hardware on demand from a limited choice, obviously. It also means that Microsoft wants PC gamers to actually get on the console by choosing the hardware they prefer. And this will cost you a bomb, and it is only for Pro Gamers.

So who should buy the Xbox One S?

Everything depends on how much money you are ready to shell out. If you have enough, I am sure you would like to try Xbox one S, and then move ahead to Project Scorpio.

IMO, Xbox One S is a great deal for those who never bought an Xbox One, still stuck on Xbox 360 and waited for a slimmer version and more space. You get features like 4K streaming and a 4K Blu-ray player which is useful only if you have 4K TV at home, and enough bandwidth. However, there is no 4K gaming, but this is not something a causal gamer will actually dig in for.
