Lumia 625 Review : Readability & Exclusive Apps : Day One

Switching to Lumia 625:

So I moved from Lumia 920 to Lumia 625 which was seamless except that I had to download everything but since it is automated, the pain was less. It is possible using the Windows Phone inbuilt cloud backup solution to restore everything. Read more about it here.

Those who move from another platform, if you have your contacts online, it will be easy to get back on Lumia 625. Those who don’t, can use the Transfer My Data App to get it done. Supports SD card

Lumia 625 uses the micro-SIM and has a slot of SD card right below SIM slot. The total supported memory for SD is 32 Gb which can be used for Music, Movies and Images but not for apps.

The battery is sealed up so there is no chance you can pull it out unless you wish to unscrew but then I am sure its not separable and will be plugged in. You get 2200 mAh battery with this.

Day 1: What I like about Lumia 625 :

Brilliant Screen:

  • It has 4.7 inch big screen which makes reading on the go is a bliss. Not only you get to see more text but you also put less strain on your eyes while reading it.
  • It’s an IPS LCD which is built using Corning Gorilla Glass version 2 making it resistance to scratches, curved display which makes sure swiping around the edges is super smooth. The screen is better compared to Lumia 520, 620 and even 720.
  • When you move your fingers around the screen you will love its smoothness. It will catch dust, moisture and finger prints but they tend to go away once you clean it unlike Lumia 520 which did not gave us the best experience when it comes to screen.

Exclusive Apps:

There are two exclusive apps for Lumia 625 which comes pre-installed — Your Movies and Flipkart eBook Offer. You will see them pinned to your start screen. I had spent more than a day using them. Keeping in mind the display of Lumia 625 is gorgeous, Nokia made the right choice by partnering with a Movie app and eBook deal.

Your Movies App:

This app activates 90 days free trial as soon you launch it on your device. Then you can choose your movie preference and start downloading movies both in HD format and SD format which differ three times in size and quality.

Since there are only handful or zero app which allow you to download and watch movie anytime on this beautiful screen, this app should do well once it is open for all devices. The HD quality is impressive. The video is sharp and so is the audio which is brilliantly clear. The SD failed to impress me because both audio and video wants up to the mark.

Flipkart eBook:

Once your launch the app and signup with your account, you will get around 18 books instantly available to download in your library. As per the offer there are 2600 eBooks you can choose from but to grab them you will have to explore the books section of Flipkart.

My reading experience was also a pleasure on Lumia 625 except for one factor which I will discuss in next section. Flipkart eBook does a nice job and gives you a good user experience when it comes to reading eBooks. I used the sepia mode most of the time instead of black and white theme.

Is the device big ? How was the experience handling it ?

Yes, it is and in fact its the biggest of all Lumia phones, even the 920. So how did I feel about handling it? I am a Lumia 920 user and for me it was a bliss because its lighter and I have a board hand to handle it.

However, If I take from a regular perspective, if you size is something which scares you, don’t buy this. The basic problem comes when you try to use it with one hand. You wont be able to do that and there is chance it will slip from your hands as you lose the grip on side when trying to reach the other end.

When using it with two hands, typing is a bliss. You will be making less typos. Also you scroll less as it will display more content.

Lumia 625 Is Big

Day 1: What I didn’t like about Lumia 625 :

Sunlight Reading:

Even though the specs say that it should good experience for day light or sunlight reading, the display failed to deliver, specially when using the black background. As an example, I used Mehdoh for twitter and use black theme. Most of the time I was seeing myself on the black area. I had similar experience for eBook reading but when I switched the theme to sepia, the reflection reduced a lot.

Problem is with the amount of reflection the device throws back and it kills the reading experience.

Less on Storage:

Like the other low-end Lumia’, it also houses 8GB ( 7.2 usable) of internal storage which is way to less for users using the above two exclusive apps. Once everything was installed, I had only 4GB left with two HD movies.

Users will have a tough time in managing space if they want to have music, movies and photos all at the same time. Though you can slide in a 32GB of SD card but for apps which cannot store their date in SD card will create problem. Big examples of such apps are Nokia Music and Your Movies app.

Summary:

That concludes my experience for day one. Other things like calling, performance look smooth for now but I will get dedicated testing for them and share with you guys. So make sure you get your questions ready on anything you want to know on Nokia Lumia 625.
