Microsoft Lync (formerly Microsoft Office Communicator) is an instant messaging client used with Microsoft Lync Server or Lync Online available with Microsoft Office 365. It was released as a replacements for Windows Messenger which was used with Microsoft Exchange Server.  Microsoft has now released the Lync 2013 app for Windows Phone.  Lync 2013 for Windows Phone extends the power of Lync to your mobile device, including voice & video over wireless, rich presence, instant messaging, conferencing, and calling features from a single, easy-to-use interface.

So if you have a connection to Lync server, you can connect with people online in your contacts.
