White Space is a spectrum between two channels which belongs mainly to Doordarshan, a service which has higher reach than any DTH in India. Government has not used this spectrum at all and Microsoft has asked for permission to get a pilot program rolling to see if it can work, as they plan it.

Our Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pushing hard on getting Internet better faster and reachable in India, and if the program works out, it will be a huge boost. Imagine the amount of benefit citizens will get when every city gets connected with free internet. Modi wants to connect every city in India with Fiber cable, something which most of the countries in the world enjoy to help boost the governance and get things faster.

That said, not only this will help Microsoft to gain a strong reputation in India, roll in their service but this will be a huge boost for the ecosystem. Once the pilot program is successfully tested, I am sure many companies will join hands together and make Internet a basic right to Indians.
