Microsoft details on How Windows 10 Collects User Data & Offers Privacy Control

Privacy, Windows 10 and the rest of the world have never gone along well. It’s just not about Microsoft, but this is one topic everybody is concerned about. In a move to strengthen Windows 10 stand on privacy, and how Microsoft collects data, Microsoft’s Marisa Rogers and Terry Myerson shared details on how everything is happening in Windows 10 behind the curtains. It all about being transparent.

They said:

We are publishing more information about the data we collect. Our commitment to you is that we only collect data at the Basic level that is necessary to keep your Windows 10 device secure and up to date. For customers who choose the Full level, we use diagnostic data to improve Windows 10 for everyone and deliver more personalized experiences for you where you choose to let us do so. Our hope is this information will help you be more informed about the data we collect and use, enabling you to make informed choices.

The blog post also reveals how Microsoft is doing it. This includes improving in-product information about your privacy, updating the Microsoft privacy statement, and publishing more information about the data that’s collected.

Microsoft recently announced Windows 10 Creators Update (Find out how to upgrade), and it comes with a detailed section on Privacy which you can control and manage.

As a matter of fact, all these options show up during a fresh installation which is assisted by Cortana using your Voice. It’s seamless, and it’s great that Microsoft has included this upfront.

The same set of setting is also available for Windows 10 Mobile users. All in all, Microsoft has understood that being transparent is the only way out from the vows of Privacy, and I am sure others will follow soon.
