Microsoft promises not to Download & Install files for New OS Upgrades without User Consent.

Not everyone has the privilege to pay for high-speed internet, nor they have the almost unlimited bandwidth. In countries like Africa where the internet is not for leisure, a forced download of upgrade files of Windows 10 almost bankrupted a nature conservation service in there.

When Microsoft announced Windows 10 free upgrade for Windows 7 & Windows 8, a lot of computers received this notification, as part of the marketing push, and it also downloaded up to 6 GB of installation files on the computers. This led the agency to file a legal action against the company for “Forced Download”

That said, a similar case in Germany led one of the agencies to file a legal action against the company for “Forced Download”. After 18 months of legal battle, Microsoft has finally agreed to stop this practices and had promised that for the new operating system, a full blown permission will be taken from users.

It’s an interesting case and tells so much about how things can get complicated. Not just piracy, but a lot of update downloads was also a reason why everyone wanted to disable it.  However, it comes with its own risk from ransom wares.

I am expecting Microsoft to soon roll out changes in their policies were a complete user consent will be taken about downloads, and also a consent just before a new update is available. It is a tricky business.
