Microsoft is making a Smartwatch or Health Tracker?

These days I am all ears to Werables, specially if it’s a smartwatch. However, we have a small problem when Windows Phone enter the domain. You really don’t have a strong player motivated to support it. So who do we need? Our beloved Microsoft.

Patentbolt revealed (via WearablesArena) a  gold mine on this. They found a patent registered by Microsoft which points to something similar to smartwatch or a health tracker which could read your vitals like heartbeat, calories etc and display it.

What you should know :

There are two parts. One that displays the data and the other is a dock which comes in many form. You can wear it on a belt or could mount it on a dock.

  • The display can be taken out and put on anything which supports it. That means Microsoft has plans for accessories from day one.
  • The device should support all sports activities including step counters. This way you can track your speed, calories and so on.
  • It will be able to connect with third party sensors to display the data right away.
  • The band holding the display panel could be washable.
  • A dock might come along which allows you to charge the main component and work as alarm clock or notifications. It can wall mountable.
  • The dock supports optical sensors and even an input to connect with more devices.
  • The dock is partly metal which will allow magnets to attach it at places you never thought about.

A Smartwatch or Something Beyond Tracker:

It’s a patent and could be applied anywhere but to my best guess it doesn’t seem to be a smartwatch. None of these displays talk about a clock or notifications or anything else. While getting a clock is not a big thing when you say watch, you need to talk about integration with a phone.

All it talks about is Heart Rate, Walking, Distance and so on. In my opinion, Microsoft seems to be building a health tracking device that will be open to connect with external devices and serve multiple purposes. By the time the tracker actually gets released, most of us will have trackers in one form or another. Some of you will have HRM while others will be using trackers as simple as Fitbit Flex.

Now it’s a await and watch game. The patent was registered in 2012 but came up in public now. It’s quite possible we may see something soon as the werables age grow as mobile industry did.
