Minimum Hardware Requirements for Windows 10 for Phones & Desktop Announced

Microsoft has finally revealed the minimum hardware requirement for Windows 10 for Phones during the WinHEC conference in Shenzhen, China.

Ram & Internal Storage:

4 GB & 512 MB RAM is still the minimum requirement. While this is really low, but keeps the windows open for new OEM to give Windows Phone a try. Since Windows Phone supports OS updates right from SD card, the phones need to have a SD card.

Display Size & Resolution:

Windows 10 will support sizes from 3 inches to maximum of 7.99 inches.  Microsoft takes zero license fees for devices up to 8 inches and hence the reason. We might see phablet phones this year.

Nokia Lumia 1520 HD Display

Resolution is where things go little crazy, as Windows 10 will support even beyond FHD display i.e. QSXGA (2560 x 2048), WXQGA (2560 x 1600) and QWXGA (2048 x 1140). This is some serious stuff because Windows Phone hasn’t really gone really far.

Here is a trick though. The more the resolution OEM wants to put in their hardware, the more RAM they would need to punch in.

  • QSXGA displays need  => 4GB RAM
  • WXQGA and QWXGA display needs => 3GB.
  • 1080P display needs a minimum of 2GB RAM
  •  720p, qHD (960 x 540), WXGA (1366 x 768) and WSVGA (1024 x 600)  needs to have at least 1 GB RAM
  •  WVGA (800 x 480) and FWVGA (854 x 480) need 512MB RAM
