Possibly Next Xbox to get a DVR to record Gameplay, Movies, TV Programs etc
Doesn’t sound right if you have a 4GB Xbox but looks like Microsoft has this idea since 2007 to put a DVR or Digitial Video Recorder into Xbox for which a patent they filed on 2007 and was granted on 27th December 2011 as Tom Guides Report.
Though there is no plan for a new Xbox but possibility of a different version of Xbox 360 cannot be denied though I would expect this to come in next version of Xbox to give it a sales boost.

Disclaimer : I am doing an analysis below of what can come and how it may work, If you want to see the original Patent, Go here and again this is not official but since the timing is so right because Xbox would be under development.
The Patent says that DVR will be used to record media on the console and will be integrated console menu allowing users to record while they are playing games. Here media can be Television programming, gaming experience (whether local or online), music, DVDs, and so on.
The best part apart from Gameplay recording is it that DVR will be able to record even if the console is turned off which means I would expect a scheduler to work TV Component. So the question here is will the DVR be running a mini OS to work on its own and it will depend on the TV Component i.e. Set-top boxes for it.
Going Deep, a detailed description says
A system for recording media on a gaming console, comprising: a first subsystem that receives and process a media title data; a second subsystem that records said media title data; a first memory on said second subsystem reserved for recording said media title data; and a second memory reserved for a gaming title data to maintain uninterrupted use of a game application while recording said media title data on said gaming console, wherein a processing time reserved for said uninterrupted use of said game application is about one order of magnitude greater than a processing time reserved for said recording of said media title data.
This means there are
- Two components of the DVR, First which analyses and Second which records.
- On the Second Component there are two memory i.e. Storage Device One which is dedicated for recording and one which is dedicated for Games. So you will not have nay lag or issues while a movie is getting record in background.
- Processing time for Games will be higher than processing time reversed for Media Recording.
Apart from the details I can pick few more points :
- Gaming console will come with Program guide that is suitable for TV watching
- You will be able to control how much space DVR will use, This contradicts of having two storage media of my analysis above.
- You will be able to define if you want to Turn on TV when you turn on your Xbox or Games.
- You will have option to Add TV and later on uninstall it later.
