Nokia HERE division partner with best in Auto industry to shape the future of Car & Drive experience

A few days ago, Nokia HERE division announced they are building tech which goes straight into your car dashboard to give you the driving experience you been using on your mobile using HERE Maps. Today we see PRCARBON reporting that Nokia Here division has partnered with Mercedes-Benz, Continental Corporation and Magneti Marelli to build a framework which can integrated Here Drive experience seamlessly into cars.

HERE Auto

After Nokia’s Mobile division acquisition by Microsoft, Nokia has taken the first step that will shape its future in location-based service and I wont be surprised if they turn out to be one of the top competitors to Google Maps and services like TomTom by increase their POI and introducing new features as it improves.

Even though it sounds bit early and probably fancy that we will need navigation in cars as most of us drive by sense and idea, HERE, the most profitable division of Nokia aims to put one in every car in coming future. Partnering with car makes is just the first step. Technology which is now costly for everybody to have might become like a de-facto for every car in future.

So what does partnering with each of them means to HERE:

Mercedes-Benz: Another vision of future when it comes to cars is self-driving cars and for that to success we need to have a 3D digital map of every route, building, lanes with dynamic updates if they tend to change. Here has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz to understand how to make this possible in future and this experiment might give a clear idea on the requirement a city need to build to make this possible.

Magneti Marelli is known to develop cost effective solutions which are  sustainable and affordable in automobile industry.  Now to make cars connected, HERE needs an efficient system and framework in place which these guys will develop. Based on their open platform and using HERE Drive offerings a real-time information like parking, traffic status, time-saving routes can be developed.

Continental Here Maps

Continental Corporation has partnered with HERE to bring location bases applications or service into cars such as Landmarks in 3D, satellite imagery, split screen functionality, traffic information and so on.

Summary : It’s a long-term goal and as of now the reach is only for riches. To bring down this service to a common man will be the biggest challenge which IMO can be fulfilled by building a Here Auto device which anybody can fit into their car. Though I understand that just getting the device is not the goal but if Here Maps have to compete with Google Maps, they need to build a device which is available as soon as one is in the car and not by launching an app on their phone.
