Review : Nokia Wireless Charging Plate – Do You Really Need it?

It is all about convenience when it comes to Nokia Wireless Charging Play which supports the latest Lumia 920, 820 Wireless charging feature. We had the review unit for a couple of days and I did my best to figure out if this particular accessory was really useful or is it just a fancy stuff to have.

What is Nokia Wireless Charging Plate ?

In simple words, it’s a wireless charger which is wired at one end but gives you freedom from two things :

  • Easy to take your call (or do anything) and place it back to charging.
  • No more fear of pulling your wall charger to the floor when you get too excited on call.

This charging plate has a built-in Qi Charging. So any phone which supports this standard can be charged by just placing on it. It uses the principle of induction to transfer electrical power over a distance of up to 1.6 inches. This means you can charge your phone with a case on provided it’s not thicker than the mentioned range.

The box packs in the charger, plug and a really long cable which can take care of a big table easily.

When you place your phone over the charging plate, a small LED will light up. This stays on until the phone charges and when the charging is complete, you will see it blinking continuously. When you don’t have the phone over it, it stays off and it looks nothing is going on.

However, it stays on and monitors from time to time to see if there is a device placed. This is the reason you will notice a short delay between the charging sound and when you place the phone on it.

If you take off the phone and place it back quickly and don’t hear the sound then its very normal. The phone itself takes a bit of time to figure out if it was taken off the plate. Hence you will see the battery icon keeps showing the charging icon.

How fast does it charge ?

After a couple of tests both random and dedicated, it took double the time compared to wall charger. I tested it with Lumia 920 which has faster charging capability. Keeping this in mind, it is not advised to use this device if you are short on time. However if you want to charge this throughout the night, it’s a magical device.

Do you really need it ?

It costs 4K Indian Rupees or 80 USD. Not cheap. So you need to know if you really need this.

Why you don’t need this?

  • If the only phone that supports wireless charging belongs to you.
  • It takes double the time your wall charger will take.
  • Because it does nothing more than charging your phone. You have option for a wireless charging plate which has NFC to launch an app or look for Nokia’s Car Wireless Charging accessory.

Why you may love it?

  • More than one phone at home supports wireless charging.
  • You feel unsafe talking on phone while it’s charging.
  • You have broken your wall charger many a times because you never remember that your phone is on charge.
  • Because you are crazy about accessories.
