OneDrive gets “Screen Efficient” with latest update for Web
Microsoft is rolling a UI refresh for OneDrive which will make files easy to get spotted and offers more when it comes to viewing on the screen. Keeping in the mind there are tons of files, and folders that keep changing on OneDrive ( for busy users), this update will make sure you can spot them easily. The design and layout changes offer:
- Option to find files faster with the new design for files & folders.
- Cohesive theme and design across apps
- Preview files without opening them
- New list flexibility and compact mode.
- Quickly locate new files
- Stay informed on what’s popular
- File card reveals essential item metadata and insights
- Powerful Recent Files view updates across OneDrive and Office

Any online storage solution, especially those which allow one to collaborate, should make sure that one can find changes quickly. While most of them have a list of recently changed files, a visually improved solution service better, especially when there is a lot of clutter. This is what OneDrive Team is aiming at. In their blog post they shared:
The new layout uses your screen space more efficiently, and the uncluttered text styles make it easier to scan across file names and notice essential information quicker. New files jump out at you. Shared files are now easier to spot, and we’ve made thumbnails larger and more detailed. Why? Because OneDrive and SharePoint are alive, active and ever-changing. New files come in, others change, some get shared out. We heard from you that these changes needed to be more apparent, and we combined that knowledge with research about how the human eye parses items. The human eye is attuned to recognize familiar shapes and colors instantly. To take advantage of this, we modified the look of the files and folders in the list and tile views so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for.
That said, this design is right now rolling to web users, but it will soon be rolled out to all the apps across platforms i.e Android, iOS, Universal Windows Platform (UWP).
The most interesting change which I noticed is the New list flexibility and compact mode. This is for the power users looking for a “high-density list view” resembling Windows File Explorer. This new compact list packs more items into folder views across OneDrive and document libraries.
These are some great changes rolling out, and you should give it a try and send your feedback to OneDrive team. For more details, read this link.
