Option to Change Default Messaging App in Windows Phone is Coming with an Update
Looks like in one of the recent updates to Windows Phone, an option has been enabled which lets you choose your default messaging app on Windows Phone. Tweeted by ZeroInfinite on Twitter, the app gives you a clear option to choose one of the supported app installed in form of drop down. This setting is available under SIM Setting where you also have options for Text message back, SMS delivery confirmations, Group text and so on. Right now it’s on 1520, 930 & 830 running the latest dev preview bits.
This option will be extremely useful for many users in countries where Text messages cost an arm, and using other messaging apps like WhatsApp, Viber and all makes more sense. What I am more interested to find out if the backup system will work only for the regular text message or will it be for the app selected. My real preference will be the regular operator based SMS but we still need a proper screenshot.
Update:
- It lets you even choose apps which support videos and chat. Apps like Skype can be used.
- It works as the default SMS app/client replacing the original one but the original one is still accessible.
- Option to send text message as text, if delivery fails via app. I guess it will be integrated with Phonebook.
- Enables Video sharing during calls.
- You will be able to add participants, pin to start and so on.
- You can switch chat between app and regular sms which is a come back feature.
- Share files, videos to messaging plus.
- It’s single selection but both messaging and messaging+ will receive SMS. Only the chosen app will alert you about the SMS.
If this is at all true, I would be definitely selecting whatsapp as my default messaging app, what will you select? Are you seeing the same on any of your devices ?
