Phone Reset Protection is Available in Windows 10 TP; Doesnt Work Though

If you remember a couple of days ago we reported that Windows Phone already has “Reset protection” feature which makes sure nobody gets to use your phone either by manually resetting it or by installing a custom rom, it seems that this feature is now enabled for all Lumias with the latest update to Windows 10 Technical Preview for Phones.

This feature has found its place in “Find My Phone” section which is under Settings > System. This feature is enabled by default on your devices, if not, just hit the toggle button to enable it. This is the same place where you should also enable your phone to periodically save your last location.

Reset Protection for Windows Phone

Sad thing that this feature doesn’t work as of now. When I toggled it on, it tries to do something but fails. What it should do is show me “Welcome to Reset Protection” and a confirmation email should be sent to my email id associated with my Microsoft account. Right after this, if anybody wants to reset my phone, it will need my Microsoft account password.

Now what if you had already given a phone to somebody, and forgot to run off reset protection. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Go to account.microsoft.com/devices, click Phones, and then click the phone that has Reset Protection.

  2. On the bottom of the Find My Phone page, click I don’t own this phone anymore.

  3. Select the I’m ready to remove my phone check box, note the recovery key, and then click Remove. The recovery key will display on the page and will also be emailed to you.

  4. When you’re certain that you have your recovery key saved, select the I’ve kept a copy of the recovery key check box, and then click Okay.

  5. Forward the recovery key email to your phone recipient.

Microsoft also recommends you to always check if the phone has a reset protection by checking it at account.microsoft.com/resetprotection. You will need to use your phone IMEI to check on it.
