Record Voice Messages and Store them on NFC Tags using NearSpeak

NFC or Near Field Communication is becoming more and more popular with latest phone supporting NFC tags. Nokia Lumia 920 also supports NFC and you can use it to transfer files to another supported phone or use it to program NFC tags. We have covered few apps based on NFC like NFC LaunchIt and Nokia NFC writer.

NearSpeak is a new app for Windows Phone based on NFC which allows you to record voice messages and store them on NFC tags. You can do a variety of tasks with the app like leaving a message for your partner, a reminder for yourself, create a public social experiment or professional multi-language tags for an exhibition.

Once you have programed your message on the NFC, others can scan this tag to read the message. To listen to the message, tap the tag with your phone. Your phone will ask you to launch NearSpeak, which will then immediately speak your message: either in the language you specified, or automatically translated to the current phone language.

How does it work?

NearSpeak uses speech recognition when listening to you, in order to convert your voice to text. NFC tags do not have enough storage space for an MP3 file which is typical less than 150 bytes. So the app will convert you voice into text and store them in the tag. You can also create cloud-based multi-language tags that always speak the language of your user. For example, record your message in English; if a Japanese phone taps the NFC tag, the user will hear your message in Japanese, automatically translated by NearSpeak. Purchase Translation Packs within the app to enable this premium feature.

NearSpeak is a very useful app if you use NFC tags with your phone. You can possibility think of various uses for the speech to text conversion by the app.
