ScreamRide Review: Brings in the best of Creativty, Fun and Demolition Skills (Xbox One)

Microsoft latest addition to Xbox One game is ScreamRide, a Roller Coaster Game, where you can build, destroy and have fun riding it all the way.  The game is developed by non other than UK-based Frontier Developments, and if it reminds you of the Roller Coster Tycoon game, you are absolutely right.

Game Modes:

The game is divided into two broader parts. The first one is Career and the second is Sandbox mode. You get access to the sandbox only once you have a complete bit of Career mode.  As you start with levels, you get an introduction on what you need to do, new challenges, bit of animation and cuteness to make it more realistic. Irony is that the it also sounds futuristic, because your guide is a Robot which has a sense of humour for humans.

Career Mode:

The game is distributed across 6 parts of the world. So every time you complete one part, you get to see new environment which matches with the culture of the place. Each part has three game types to play from: ScreamRider, Demolition Expert and Engineer. Good thing is that you don’t need to play all of them to complete one level, instead you can choose what you like, say for example “ScreamRider”, and keep playing it across the 6 parts.  As a matter of fact, I did not notice the Demolition and Engineer section for some time.

Now each of these play forms have multiple sub-levels with tasks which is either time based or getting a minimum star rating or both. Unless you get that done, you will not unlock the next area. Chances are that when you start, you will end up playing a couple of them twice.

That said, don’t take them lightly. I am sure if you are a serious gamer, you won’t, but if you have slightest though about this being a lay down relax and play game, it’s going to keep you on the edge.

ScreamRider:

Like the name say, it’s all about making your riders scream. You control the roller coaster which is unlike the regular ones have a booster in the rear.  The faster you go, the more G’s you can pull, the riders going to scream more, and better all be your scores.

For each track you have three rounds. In each round you need to make sure your roller coaster stays on the track, keep gathering speed boost, and try to make your coaster run on single track by balancing them off nicely. The leaning part is quite challenging, specially when you are on speed, but if you do it right, you gather some good points.

Screamride Roller Coaster

Each track have turbo sections. To grab maximum boost, you need to press X just before leaving the track. If you press it too early, you won’t get the boost. These speed boost help you complete the track faster giving you more score.

There are also parts of track which are incomplete. You jump over and land on tracks on other half. It’s easy to land, just make sure to press X when you are close enough. You do ti right you make points.

That said, as you go ahead, the tracks become challenging, you start getting more obstacles, and it will feel almost impossible. Personally I haven’t got past 4th yet, but I already feel it.

Demolitions Expert:

If you find riding and controlling the roller coasters bit boring, welcome to the creative side. This and the Engineer mode is for those who love to tinker with things. The destruction mode is to get down a structure which was probably used for the rides. You have buildings all around the area and you need to aim a spherical or dumbbells or even coaster to get them down.

Screamride Demolition

The more destruction you cause, the less projectiles you use, the better demolisher you become. To throw these, you have throwing machine which keeps the object rotating. You need to select the trigger strength and direction ( Use A) and then when its in the right direction, let it go.  The catch of this mode is to get your projectiles land around the charge that has been set to blow the structure. Either that or if you can hit at a place so the bridling drops a part or itself on the charge.

Engineer:

This is all brain stuff. Unless you are into bridling stuff, this is something you can skip. In here you need to complete a part of track such that the coaster can drive through without the riders falling down, the coaster doesn’t stall and you use the minimum required pieces.

Screamride Engineer

When making it, you can zoom in and out, change camera angles, twist the tracks and test it. After testing, you get feedback on where it went wrong, what was the scream score, etc. You can share tracks and even download blueprints which is shared by others.

Achievements & Conclusion:

There are 41 achievements with a total of 1000 G points. Tito get all of them you will have to get five-star rating on every level and meet the goals. They aren’t easy, specially when it comes to higher level, but definitely doable.

That said, the game is an odd man out, but completely rocks for its style and unique modes. While this might not be for everybody, as you may not be interested in all the modes, this is still a great game to play from time to time. If you have creative genius on your side, dutch for it.
