Windows 10 S user can Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free until March 31, 2018
Microsoft is extending the “free upgrade” period for Windows 10 S users running the newest Surface device by another three months. During the announcement, Microsoft offered the free upgrade which expired on 31st December.
Windows 10 S is a trimmed version of Windows 10 Pro which restricts installation of EXE files. The idea here is to make sure everything comes from the store and is safe. While Microsoft is still making effort to get more desktop apps to Store via Bridge tools, for anyone holding a Windows 10 S on the premium device doesn’t make sense, especially when the upgrade only cost $50.

While Surface has been the most successful hardware from Microsoft, it’s taking a decline now. No, I am not talking about the consumer survey report, but this year’s IFA announcement had multiple laptops which were at par, and some even better than Surface devices. They all are offering Windows 10 Pro for a good price.
Announced via blog post where Microsoft shared the availability of Cobalt Blue, Burgundy, or Graphite Gold, for Surface, they also made an official announcement for this extension. Holiday is almost around the corner, and it only makes sense for Microsoft to keep pushing the offer.
That said, it’s going to be tough for Microsoft to sell Windows 10 S on premium laptops which are powerful enough for a lot of work, and especially when a lot of software are yet to make their way to the store. IMO, it’s going to be a better option on cheaper laptops, some of which we should see in coming days, but only time can tell if it’s going to work.
