While Microsoft did bring Windows 10 Mobile to many devices, performance is still an issue on some of the devices. While it is best to wait for updates so you can keep using the awesome features of Windows 10 Mobile, if you cannot, Microsoft will get you can option to officially downgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 system.
Jason, program manager at Microsoft’s Windows Insider Engineering Team, shared that devices which get stuck during the upgrade process (boot loop anyone?), will need Windows Phone 8.1 as recovery image. This essentially opens up the way to downgrade to Windows Phone 8.1 for all the devices which initially shipped with the 8.1
So now you basically have four choices:
- Stay on Windows Phone 8.1 + Never Upgrade
- No Official Upgrade ? Join Windows 10 Insiders Programme.
- Upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile.
- Roll Back to Windows Phone 8.1 post Windows 10 Mobile Upgrade using Microsoft Device Recovery Tool.
I tried this with one of the old Lumia device I still have, but I don’t see an option to download the old image as of now, but you should get an option similar to the image above or Microsoft might update the recovery tool with specific roll back option for the devices. Updates which appear post downgrade should show up aka Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 & Update 2 along with the firmwares.
Remember if you managed to save the 8.1 image before the upgrade was officially rolled out, you an still do it using a third party tool.
@GabeAul For a Retail user going from 8.1 to 10 who may hit an issue and need to recover, they need an 8.1 image to recover to.

That said, its good to see Microsoft offering so many options for consumers, and is listening to the consumers so they can still get the same experience they had before. However, one thing we all need to understand. Windows Phone 8.1 App scenario is not going to improve, which is improving with Windows 10, specially with the universal app scenario.
