Windows Phone maintains its 2nd Position in India for third consecutive quarter in smartphone platform.

Windows Phone, in spite of its slow update rate, is growing faster in third world countries and parts like Asia-Pacific and Middle East. We have just received an interesting update which claims that Windows Phone maintains its second position in India when it comes to Smartphone Platform for the third consecutive quarter. So if it manages for next quarter, one year of  dominance will be complete.

Nokia Lumia Family

The IDC Asia Pacific Mobile Phone Tracker (April – June, 2013), released in August 2013 has revealed that for the third consecutive quarter, Windows Phone is the second most widely used smartphone platform in India. With a market share of 5.4%, Windows Phone has maintained its lead over competing platforms – namely, Apple iOS and Blackberry.

  • For the third consecutive quarter, Windows Phones emerged as the #2 smartphone OS in India
  • At 60% quarter-on-quarter growth, Windows Phone outgrew the smartphone market and was among the fastest growing smartphone operating systems
  • Q2 CY13 was the fastest growth quarter for Windows Phone – in terms of both volume and  market share

One of the primary reasons on this which anybody can guess is because of presence in low-end Lumia devices in India which is very sensitive when it comes to pricing. Nokia was successful in introducing phones at every price point, starting from Lumia 520 which costs as low as Rs 10,000 to Lumia 625 which costs 19K approximately. These phones have been well thought out and are strategic so that they can deliver a particular set of features.

Microsoft has also started taking Indian market a little more seriously on mobile grounds and release of IRCTC app, exclusively, for Windows Phone is one example to start with. As the Windows Phone platform has progressed lot of Indian Entertainment services like Gaana, Your Movies and more are bringing their apps to the platform. This is an important factor keeping in mind that India contributes to a huge share when it comes to Android.
