YouTube Gaming & Live Streaming Set to Launch to Compete with Twitch

In late 2013, Google all of a sudden started banning lot of YouTube Channel which had gaming content. Problem was with no clarity if a game play can be monetised, and most of the game companies had no clear rules if Youtube publishers can do it, with out without permission. Then came Twitch, a platform which was solely build for Live Game streaming. It supported all major gaming platforms including Xbox One, and came with option to monetise. Google wanted to buy the platform, but backed out due to anti trust issues.

Fast forward, Google yesterday announced YouTube Gaming along with support of Live Streaming. You can either subscribe to a Game or if you are subscribed to a channel which will live stream, you get instant notification. It will be available this summer, starting in the U.S. and U.K. Features that will be included are:

  • Live experience that makes it simpler to broadcast your gameplay to YouTube.
  • High frame rate streaming at 60fps, DVR, and automatically converting your stream into a YouTube video.
  • Redesigning the system so that you no longer need to schedule a live event ahead of time.
  • Single link you can share for all your streams.

That said, Xbox being one of the major consoles and YouTube already have an app for Xbox One, we should see the streaming support to be rolled out for the platform as well. While most of the gamers are now hooked on to Twitch, YouTube need to work hard to compete with it on all fronts.  So is Microsoft going to build an app for Windows Phone or the future Windows Mobile? YouTube blogpost has no mention of that.

While nobody knows if its because the marketshare is low or it’s the competition, but hopefully, when Xbox gets the Windows 10 version of Universal store and updates, Google might roll out their  “Universal’ YouTube app which may work on Windows Mobile as well.
